Gitanjali Sen is Professor of Economics at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, India. Trained at the University of Missouri–Columbia (Ph.D. and M.A.) and the University of Kalyani and Calcutta, her research lies in development economics with a focus on applied microeconomics, particularly education, health, gender, and demography. She has published widely in leading journals, including the Journal of Human Capital, Journal of Population Economics, Feminist Economics, World Development, and the Journal of Development Studies, among many others. She has worked in estimating the impacts of negative health shocks, universal immunization programs, and cash transfers on maternal and child health, women's empowerment, determinants of mental health conditions, and access to education and labor market outcomes, having public policy relevance. Gitanjali has previously worked with the Observer Research Foundation at its Mumbai and New Delhi offices, the Administrative Staff College of India at Hyderabad, Comat Technologies at Bangalore and Mumbai, and the Jain Group of Institutions at Bangalore. She actively mentors PhD and Master’s students and contributes to academic services, peer review, and international conferences. She is also a Fellow of the Global Labor Organization (Germany), and is visiting the Chair of Development Economics and Economic History at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland in June-July, 2026.
